Route : Delhi – Moradabad – Haldwani – Bhowali – Jyolikot – Khairna – RanikhetQueen's field as it literally means, Ranikhet is named according to legend, after Rani Padmini wife of Raja Sukhardev who liked this place so much that she thought of settling down here. The tranquil green meadows surrounded by soaring pine and leafy oak forests with a 180 panoramic view of the Himalayas, home to large Tudor-style bungalows, a botanical orchard-cum-garden, churches, a country club, a golf course and a full fledged army regiment. Ranikhet and its twin Majkhali are spread along a 15 km ridge that affords one of the most magical views of the Himalayas. Chaubatia, 10 km from Ranikhet away houses the botanical gardens and a Govt. fruit research institute where one see different varieties of exotic flowers and orchids. It also serves as a vantage point to view snow clad Himalayan mountain peaks including NandaDevi, Trishul, Nandaghunti and Nilkanth. Uppat, 6 km away hoses a very beautiful 9-hole golf course among fruit orchards. Jhula Devi Temple in Ranikhet is very popular with the local and is famous for innumerable bells it has, tied by devotees to get their wishes fulfilled. Kallika, near Uppat is know for its Kali temple and affords excellent views. Bhalu Dam, 3km from Chaubatia has a man made lake serving as a reservoir for a dam on Kosi River. It supplies water to the region including Ranikhet. Dunagiri (47 km) - A scenic 14 km drive from Dwarahat,will take you to Dunagiri,from where a climb up 364 steps will take you to the 12th century Durga Temple. Windsor Lodge was built as a quaint hunting lodge in 1909 at Kalika Estate on the outskirts of Ranikhet cantonment. Most of Ranikhet’s Sprawling bungalows were built and owned by shah family in late 19th century. The patriarch of the family Rai Sahib Harkison Lall Shah also established Kalika Estate, a ten acre property abundant with oak and pine amidst breathtaking scenery in the midst of what was then a forest rich in wild life. The estate was beautifully landscaped with fruit trees including apple, apricot, peach, pear and plum.
