This quaint little cantonment retains its original charm, right from the days Chakrata was established by Colonel Hume, 125 years ago. The town has a magnificent view of the Greater Himalaya and everything around is delightfully green – deodar, rhododendron, cover the hills. If you crave bright lights and bustling bazaars then Chakrata is not for you. It is ideal for those who want to do nothing more than relax in the mountain sunshine, or at most tackle one of the many treks around the area. Around Chakrata Tiger Falls – At 312 feet the second highest in India, is a pleasant 5 km walk away. Take in the views of Banderpoonch, SwargaRohini peaks from Chilmiri Neck. Ramtal – It is a beautiful horticulture garden 10 km away on the Mussoorie road having apple gardens and a natural pond. Deoban – Situated at a height of 9400 feet, a dramatic 13 km drive from Chakrata.It is a sensational clearing in the forest where set atop the most beautiful alpine meadow is an old, British built Forest Rest House. It is here that our Special Forces conduct their training and you will notice incredibly steep rock faces on which soldiers learn their mountaineering skills. Surkanda Devi Temple - 8 km. from Dhanaulti, on the road towards Chamba lies the Surkanda Devi Temple, famous for its Ganga Dasahra fair in autumn. It is part of the Devi Darshan triangle, which offers trekking opportunities around Dhanaulti - Surkanda Devi, Chandrabadni and Kunjapuri Himalayan Weavers. Located on Mussoorie-Dhanaulti Road is Himalayan Weavers, which produces hand-woven shawls, stoles, and scarves using only natural dyes and wool, eri silk and pashmina. Their aim is to produce high quality handloom products, popularize the use of environmentally friendly natural dyes and provide a market for craft products made in the Himalayan region. Surrounded by thick Oak and blue Pine forests, Lansdowne is a very charming place for a quiet holiday as it is devoid of the usual hustles and bustle of hill stations. Lansdowne has scenic beauty and good surroundings. The pine and oak trees provide a healthy climate. Kotdwar (45 km.) : A gateway to the hills and one of the last rail terminus for Garhwal. The highlight of this place is that even at an altitude of 2092 mtrs., there are water pools. Walks - The area offers some of the best walks and picnic spots in the lovely pine forests. Hikers would enjoy the nature trials and camping in the forest, which can range from a day to a few days depending upon the terrain and route taken.
